Community Health & Safety
Hi everyone,
This is Laura Sánchez-Parkinson, your Ward 3 City Councilor, representing parts of the Old North End and Downtown.
This month, much of my time has been focused on connecting with residents, engaging across City Council committees, learning from local and national experts, and exploring thoughtful approaches to building a healthier and safer Burlington.
One effort I especially want to highlight is a three-part Community Health & Safety series through the Racial Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Committee (+ Community). At our first meeting, we heard from Emergency Medical Services about the latest data on alcohol and substance use in Burlington, along with perspectives from people with lived and professional experience.
Upcoming Community Health & Safety meetings:
• Tuesday, September 1 – 5:30–7:30pm
• Tuesday, September 15 – 5:30–7:30pm
You can join us in person or virtually. Meeting details and Zoom links will be available on Burlington’s CivicClerk:

Many of us are searching for solutions related to substance use, mental health, homelessness, and public safety. My hope is that these conversations help both Councilors and community members better understand the health challenges facing Burlington so we can make informed decisions as we consider policies that affect our community. I also want to take a moment to encourage us to remain critical, curious, and thoughtful about what we read, hear, and see information and news.
A couple more dates to know:
– Wednesday, September 2 at 6:30pm: The Ward 3 Neighborhood Planning Assembly will hold Steering Committee elections. Please join us, and consider getting involved!
– Monday, September 14 at 6pm: I plan to introduce a resolution Recognizing the Contributions of Burlington’s Latin American Community and Supporting Cultural Festivals. If you identify as Latino/a/x or simply want to support and celebrate our community, I invite you to join us or speak during Public Forum.
As always, please reach out with questions, concerns, or ideas. I appreciate hearing from you.
